House Oversights – Week of September 25

Oversight Committee member Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) intends to introduce an amendment to a House appropriations bill that will propose eliminating all funding for the National Labor Relations Board, which is investigating Boeing for potential union retaliation after it opened a non-union plant in Gowdy’s home state.

Postal unions held rallies across the country this week, from South Carolina to California, voicing support for a bill to save the U.S. Postal Service and voicing opposition to a bill from Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) that would force postal employee layoffs.

The House Oversight Committee is “stepping up its efforts to push the NFL and its players toward an agreement on testing for human growth hormone (HGH).” Issa and Minority Leader Elijah Cummings (D-MD) have invited NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith, Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, to a meeting on Capitol Hill.

Oversight Republican Jason Chaffetz (UT) is calling for a permanent end to the federal gas tax, calling it a “political slush fund” and arguing that state and local governments are “fully capable” of developing their own environmental standards (rather than be saddled with regulations attached to federal funding for highways under the tax).

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) has scheduled a full committee hearing next Tuesday to discuss a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
